Most Popular Electric Car Motors

Electric car motors are used in many different types of vehicles, but do you know which are the most popular? Are there more DC or AC motors for sale on the market? There are many different electric motors on the market, but the three most commonly used types are: the series wound DC motors, the permanent magnet motors and the 3-phase AC motors for sale. Each of these three types is unique and has different advantages and disadvantages. Let’s explore all three types together and find out which one is right for you.

1

DC Series Wound Electric Car Motors

This is the basic type of electric car motors and is known as the king of torque. The big amount of torque is the main characteristic of DC series wound electric car motors, as it tops all other motor types. As this motor burns a lot of tire rubber and generates a lot of smoke, electric drag racers love this motor. However, the series motors cannot be used where a constant speed is desired under conditions where the load varies. This means that electric cars that will be used in hilly or rough terrains cannot be equipped with these motors.

Permanent Magnet DC Electric Motors

A permanent magnet DC electric motor is a type of electric motor that is especially designed to be used from a direct current power source. It is a very popular electric car motor, but that doesn’t mean that it is one of the best ones as well. The biggest disadvantage of permanent magnet DC motors is that they operate very loudly. As all brushed DC motors, the brushes that generate electrical radio interference makes a loud noise, especially when no filters are used. Most permanent magnet DC electric motors are used in bikes, motorcycles, scooters and similar vehicles.

3-Phase AC Induction Motors

The third popular type of electrical car motor is the 3-phase AC induction motor. This motor is better than the previous two models, in most terms. Although DC motors are known for better cost-efficiency than AC motors, when used for the right applications, the 3-phase induction AC motors for sale can be a really cost effective option. They use the same batteries the DC motors use, with the difference that their inverter take the place of the controller that is present in any DC motor system. Having the inverters installed increases the price of 3-phase AC induction motors, but it is worth. Unlike DC motors, the AC motors for sale are able to run at a constant speed all day long.
